CHICAGO’S LINCOLN PARK CONSERVANCY ANNOUNCES $3 MILLION DONATION FOR NORTH POND RESTORATION PROJECT
Chicago, Il- June 29, 2020- The Lincoln Park Conservancy is pleased to announce a $3 million gift by an anonymous donor to support the Conservancy’s restoration of North Pond. The Conservancy is implementing a comprehensive restoration of North Pond over the next three years. “This generous leadership gift is the largest single donation received by the Conservancy and will cover the expense of the dredge of the Pond, the most significant project cost,” said Doug Widener, Executive Director. “This gift is also a catalyst that will spark additional community support for this important project,” Widener added. The dredge will return the Pond to its historic 8-foot depth and will be followed by restoration of the crumbling shoreline and expansion of natural areas surrounding the Pond.
This gift, in addition to a $1 million pledge and other support puts the total amount raised to over $4.25 million, which is 60% of the total project budget.
North Pond is the habitat of over 200 bird species and dozens of endangered or threatened Illinois plants and animals. It is much beloved by birders, runners, anglers, families, and tourists.
